Kahoot alternatives: which one, depending on what you run
Kahoot is built for a room with a host and a shared screen. Here is when that is the right tool, and when it is not.

How a game goes
- Ask first whether there is a host. Kahoot assumes somebody at the front and a screen everyone can see — without those, half its value is gone.
- Then ask whether the quiz is prepared in advance. Kahoot is excellent for a prepared quiz; less so when the subject gets decided at the table.
- Count the installs. A browser tool asks nothing of anyone; an app asks for an install, and that is a real cost for a group you will see once.
- Last, ask where the questions come from — that is the difference you notice during the game rather than before it.
Common questions
- What is the best Kahoot alternative for a classroom?
- Usually none: for a classroom with a projector, Kahoot remains the best choice, and Quizizz comes close. The tools listed here are built for a group with no host, which is a different problem.
- And for a night with friends?
- There, Kahoot is a classroom tool used at a party: it wants a host, a screen, and a quiz prepared beforehand. Something designed for phones with no host asks for less setup.
- Is there a free alternative with no sign-up?
- Yes — several multiplayer quiz sites run in the browser with no account and no install. That is their real advantage. In exchange their question bank is fixed: they cannot build a quiz about something that happened yesterday.
- What does EpiQuiz do that Kahoot does not?
- A quiz on an arbitrary topic, made on the spot, with questions researched and then checked rather than written in one pass. What Kahoot does better: everything that assumes a room, a host and a shared screen.
